Severe flooding in eastern Romania has caused at least four deaths and extensive damage to thousands of homes. The flooding, a result of days of heavy rain, has also left tens of thousands without power in Romania and the Czech Republic. More rainfall is expected in these areas, as well as in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, southern Germany, and parts of Austria.
In response to the rising river levels, authorities have initiated evacuation measures in some towns along the Czech-Polish border and have implemented preventative anti-flood measures in Prague. The city, which faced catastrophic floods in 2002, has invested heavily in flood barriers to protect against potential damage.
In the Czech Republic, northern and northeastern regions have been particularly affected by flooding, leading to blackouts for thousands of households. Forecasters are predicting more heavy rainfall in the region, prompting warnings for residents to prepare for potential evacuations.
Neighboring countries such as Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Austria are also bracing for flooding, with officials urging residents to monitor the situation closely and be prepared for possible evacuations. The coming days are expected to be challenging as emergency services work to respond to the widespread flooding across central and eastern Europe.
