Ukraine Reports Major Drone Attack on Russian Bombers in ‘Spiderweb’ Operation

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) reportedly executed a major operation targeting over 40 Russian bombers within Russia, marking a significant military strike amid ongoing conflict. Dubbed “Spiderweb,” the operation aimed at strategic Russian aircraft at facilities as far as the Belaya air base in Irkutsk, approximately 3,000 miles from Ukraine. Video evidence purportedly shows drone attacks, with explosions and smoke depicted at the site.

Preliminary assessments indicate that the attack has inflicted damage exceeding $2 billion on Russian aviation assets, with substantial destruction reported. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the efforts of his nation’s intelligence agencies but did not confirm the specific operation. His chief of staff hinted at the attack’s significance by posting a spiderweb emoji.

This operation was reportedly in preparation for over a year and a half, involving the clandestine transport of drones into Russia, cleverly concealed within mobile wooden cabins on cargo trucks. The drones were launched remotely, targeting the bombers effectively.

Russia has yet to make an extensive statement regarding the attacks; however, regional officials confirmed drone activity, notably in Irkutsk, while claiming the drone was truck-launched. This assault follows a period of heavy bombardment from Russia, which recently included missile strikes that resulted in significant casualties on the Ukrainian side.

Moreover, as tensions escalate, diplomatic attempts are underway, with both Russia and Ukraine set to engage in talks in Istanbul. Zelenskyy emphasized the need for a full ceasefire, prisoner releases, and the return of abducted children ahead of the discussions. Concurrently, two bridge collapses in Russian regions near Ukraine led to fatalities and injuries, with allegations of deliberate sabotage surfacing.
