Press Release: Community Talks Impact of Social Media on Youth at Screening Event
ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – On Tuesday evening, the Grandin Theater hosted a crucial screening of the documentary “Can’t Look Away: The Case Against Social Media,” aimed at raising awareness about the profound effects of technology on children and youth. Co-host Emily Harrison opened the conversation, emphasizing the rising issues of anxiety, depression, and self-harm among young users of social media.
The film serves as an urgent call to action for parents and caregivers to recognize the struggles their children face in today’s digital landscape. "This generation is grappling with challenges that previous ones never encountered. It’s essential to acknowledge that our kids may be suffering due to the pervasive influence of screens," Harrison stated.
Nancy Hans, executive director of the Partnership for Community Wellness, underscored the necessity for collective action. "We need to raise awareness among parents, grandparents, and adults. Our kids don’t need screens—they need meaningful interactions and experiences," she expressed.
The screening sparked vital discussions among parents, educators, and children, focusing on strategies to foster healthier relationships with technology. Participants collectively recognized the need to encourage outdoor activities and face-to-face interactions, promoting an "analog" lifestyle over a digital one.
The Partnership for Community Wellness aims to continue addressing these pressing societal issues through monthly programs designed to empower families. Through initiatives like this, they hope to shape a healthier future for the next generation, reminding the community of the importance of interpersonal connections in an increasingly digital world.
