Insights on Political Landscape: Omaha Mayor, Historical Voter Turnout in New Jersey and Virginia

Omaha’s Mayoral Shift Reflects Broader Electoral Dynamics

In a significant turn of events for local politics, Democrat John Ewing decisively defeated incumbent Republican Mayor Jean Stothert of Omaha by nearly 13 percentage points in a recent nonpartisan election. Ewing, who has served as Douglas County treasurer since 2007, capitalized on local dissatisfaction regarding a controversial streetcar project, which also drew criticism from primary opponent Mike McDonnell—a former Republican state senator who switched parties.

Historically, Omaha has leaned Democratic in presidential elections, backing Kamala Harris by 19 points in the last cycle. However, it remained a red stronghold in down-ballot races, with Republican Congressman Don Bacon consistently winning reelection in Nebraska’s 2nd District, an area marked as a potential target for Democrats in 2026.

The voter turnout for the mayoral race, at approximately 86,500 ballots, was notably lower than the 215,000 votes cast in the 2024 House race, indicating differing electorates between presidential and local contests. Higher turnout rates were observed in Black-majority precincts, contributing to Ewing’s historic win as Omaha’s first Black mayor.

While the Omaha mayoral election may not have immediate national implications, it poses a potential reevaluation for local Republicans, especially as Bacon’s future remains uncertain amidst whispers of retirement.

In the lead-up to closely monitored gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia this November, recent turnout patterns demonstrate shifting electoral landscapes. Virginia’s gubernatorial elections saw Democratic turnout decline in 2021, even as Republican Glenn Youngkin captured victory. Similarly, New Jersey’s previously secure blue municipalities displayed signs of waning support for the Democrats. As the political dynamics evolve, both parties will be keenly focused on voter mobilization strategies to adapt to these emerging trends.
