Nebraska State Senator Mike Jacobson Reveals Battle with Cancer, Commits to Reelection
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — State Senator Mike Jacobson, chair of the Banking, Commerce, and Insurance Committee, publicly disclosed this week that he has been battling a serious form of skin cancer for the past two years. Diagnosed with metastatic melanoma in January 2023, Jacobson’s condition has significantly impacted his health, as the cancer has spread to his right lung.
In a heartfelt post to his supporters, Jacobson recounted the physical challenges he has faced, including mobility issues leading to occasional falls, the most recent resulting in a brief hospitalization. Despite these hurdles, he expressed determination to continue serving his constituents and uphold his commitment to reelection in 2026.
"Even though my physical presence may be limited at times, my dedication to our community remains unwavering," Jacobson affirmed. He emphasized that his resolve to advocate for his district has only strengthened during this difficult period.
The senator, appointed to the Legislature by former Governor Pete Ricketts in February 2022, successfully secured a four-year term in November of that year. He is eligible to run for one more term, with no other candidates currently declared for his seat as of now.
Jacobson praised the “excellent” healthcare provided by Great Plains Health in North Platte and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, expressing gratitude to his care team and his wife, Julie, for their unwavering support. He remains cautiously optimistic about his recovery journey.
With the legislative primary scheduled for May 2026, the top two vote-getters will advance to the general election in November, as Jacobson continues to focus on delivering results for his district amidst his health challenges.
