Nebraska Senator Mike Jacobson Reveals Battle with Cancer, Commits to Public Service

North Platte, NE — February 11, 2025 — State Senator Mike Jacobson, chair of the Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committee, publicly announced this week his two-year battle with metastatic melanoma. Diagnosed in January 2023, the cancer has spread to his right lung, necessitating ongoing treatment.

In a heartfelt message to constituents, Jacobson, who represents North Platte, described the physical challenges he has encountered, including swelling and weakness in his legs, leading to several falls. His most recent incident resulted in a brief hospitalization earlier this week. Despite these challenges, Jacobson maintains a positive outlook on his recovery. “While my physical presence in the district may be limited at times,” he assured, “my commitment to serving our community remains unwavering.”

Jacobson, who was appointed by former Governor Pete Ricketts in February 2022 and later won a four-year term, emphasized his determination to continue serving his district. He officially announced his candidacy for reelection in 2026, reiterating his pledge to prioritize community needs over politics.

The senator acknowledged the excellent care he has received from North Platte’s Great Plains Health and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, expressing gratitude to his medical team and the support of his wife, Julie. “The continued prayers, kind words, and support from constituents and colleagues mean the world to us,” he stated.

Jacobson joins the ranks of other senators who have publicly battled cancer, including State Sen. Jane Raybould and former State Sen. Tom Brewer. As of now, no other candidates have announced their intention to contest Jacobson’s seat in the upcoming 2026 election. The top two vote-getters in the nonpartisan primary will advance to the November general election.
