Remote Work Rises Amid Productivity Challenges: Study Reveals Underlying Trends
A recent study by LendingTree has highlighted a growing trend among remote workers—nearly 40% have turned to digital tools to create the illusion of productivity while working from home. The study, conducted by QuestionPro, surveyed 2,000 Americans aged 18 to 79 from May 1 to 6, 2025, and found that a greater number of men (44%) engage in this behavior compared to women (32%).
In addition to these productivity hacks, many remote workers are also finding ways to earn extra cash. Approximately 51% of respondents reported generating side income while holding their primary jobs, with men (58%) again leading compared to women (42%). Interestingly, 58% of those not currently seeking extra work expressed interest in doing so, particularly among women, with 10% frequently considering it versus 6% of men.
Challenges unique to remote work were also revealed, especially for parents. A staggering 74% of remote workers with children under 18 are managing child care responsibilities alongside their job tasks. Additionally, 69% of these parents engage in household chores during working hours. The study also indicated that 52% of remote workers are putting in longer hours due to these distractions.
Despite these challenges, many remote workers are resistant to returning to traditional office environments. The study found that 45% oppose a full-time office return, with 54% of parents feeling similarly. Gender differences are apparent here as well, with 49% of men expressing opposition compared to 40% of women.
As remote work continues to evolve, these insights shed light on the intricacies of this increasingly popular employment mode, raising questions about productivity and work-life balance in a home setting.
