Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, a 39-year-old Utah resident, was shot and killed during the “No Kings” demonstration in downtown Salt Lake City on Saturday. Police have identified him as an “innocent bystander,” stating he was not the intended target. An arrest has been made of 24-year-old Arturo Gamboa, who faces a murder charge. The circumstances surrounding the shooting involved Gamboa manipulating an AR-15-style rifle, prompting two individuals from a “peacekeeping team” to draw their firearms and order him to drop his weapon. Instead, Gamboa fled into the crowd, holding the rifle in a firing position, which led to one of the “peacekeepers” firing three shots. While one shot struck Gamboa, another fatal shot hit Ah Loo.
The police are investigating the actions of the peacekeepers, who are not law enforcement officials, to determine whether the two involved will face charges. Although Gamboa did not directly fire the shot that killed Ah Loo, detectives have charged him with murder based on his reckless behavior, which showed a “depraved indifference to human life.” The state medical examiner’s office will establish the official cause of death for Ah Loo.
Timing of the events unfolded shortly after police received reports of gunfire at approximately 7:56 PM. Officers found Ah Loo injured while trying to clear the scene. Shortly thereafter, they discovered Gamboa nearby, also injured, with the AR-15 weapon at his side. This incident occurred amidst national “No Kings” events, countering President Trump’s military parade, coinciding with protests following immigration raids in various U.S. cities.
