Nebraska Travel Advisors Celebrate Legislative Victory Against Sales Tax
In a significant win for travel advisors, Nebraska’s legislative session concluded without imposing new sales taxes on travel packages, including professional fees charged by advisors. The American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) applauded this outcome, as a proposed tax increase of up to 7.5 percent could have added $262 to a $3,500 cruise vacation. This increase aimed to offset lower property taxes but raised concerns about driving travelers to book trips out of state.
ASTA mobilized a robust grassroots effort in Nebraska, encouraging travel advisors to voice their concerns to state senators. Jessica Klement, ASTA’s Vice President of Advocacy, emphasized the importance of travel advisors in facilitating both business travel and handling unexpected events. She stated that taxing travel services would not only burden clients with higher fees but could also push them to seek services from out-of-state competitors.
Klement commended Nebraska legislators for narrowly avoiding the proposed tax, which she argued would have harmed local businesses and consumers alike. The effort underscores the resilience of Nebraska’s travel advisors in safeguarding their industry’s interests.
