Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cucumbers Grows to 18 States, Sickening 45 People

A salmonella outbreak linked to a Florida cucumber producer has affected 45 individuals across 18 states, as reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Retailers, including Target and Walmart, have recalled cucumbers and ready-to-eat products containing cucumbers, advising customers to dispose of these items. Affected products include a Greek-style chicken salad from Boar’s Head and various sushi items sold under the Mai brand.

The outbreak is primarily associated with salmonella montevideo, although other salmonella strains were found in samples from a Pennsylvania distribution center of Florida-based Bedner Growers, the suspected source. While these other strains appear unrelated to a prior outbreak in spring, investigations are ongoing, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) examining potential links to additional illnesses.

The FDA indicates that 45 reported cases have resulted in 16 hospitalizations, though no fatalities have occurred. The contaminated cucumbers were sold from April 29 to May 19 and were originally identified at Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market in Florida. The FDA’s inspection, which uncovered contaminated cucumbers, followed a previous outbreak linked to the same producer.

Salmonella can contaminate produce through animal feces, leading to potential health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and immunocompromised individuals. Symptoms typically appear six hours to six days post-infection, manifesting as stomach cramps, diarrhea, and nausea. The CDC categorizes salmonella as a major cause of foodborne illness and related hospitalizations and deaths in the U.S. and globally.
