North Korea Sends Thousands of Troops to Assist Russia in Its Campaign Against Ukraine, Report Reveals

A recent UN report reveals that Russia has deployed thousands of North Korean soldiers and significant weaponry to support its operations in Ukraine. The Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team (MSMT), involving 11 member states, including the U.S., the UK, and Japan, reported that North Korea supplied over 11,000 troops, at least 100 ballistic missiles, and nearly 9 million rounds of ammunition by 2024. This collaboration significantly enhances Moscow’s missile attacks on Ukrainian cities, targeting essential civilian infrastructure.

The report indicates that Russia is reciprocating by aiding North Korea’s ballistic missile programs, improving their missile capabilities through the provision of air defense equipment and electronic warfare systems. Both nations are accused of violating UN Security Council resolutions regarding arms transfers and military cooperation.

Notably, in April, North Korea confirmed its troops’ engagement alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, marking a military partnership solidified by a mutual defense treaty signed by Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin in June 2024. The treaty includes mutual defense commitments, allowing North Korea to claim participation in Russia’s efforts to reclaim territories, such as the Kursk region.

Despite ongoing military cooperation, both nations deny any arms transfers. As Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine persist, there’s uncertainty surrounding potential peace talks, with Kyiv signaling readiness to negotiate while demanding clarification from Moscow on its war intentions.

Casualties in the conflict are substantial, with unreported figures suggesting hundreds of thousands on both sides, including tens of thousands of civilian deaths. Russia aims for negotiations that require Ukraine to cede territories and abandon NATO aspirations, which Kyiv views as tantamount to surrender. The situation remains tense as military offensives continue while diplomatic efforts attempt to address the ongoing conflict.
