Fifth-Generation Nebraska Cattle Farmer Optimistic About Beef Industry’s Strength

Future of Nebraska’s Beef Industry Through Youth Voices

In celebration of National Beef Month, we highlight the promising future of Nebraska’s beef industry through the perspectives of local youth. Nebraska stands as the nation’s top beef exporter in 2024, generating over $2 billion, underscoring agriculture’s vital role in the state’s economy. Family-run ranches continue to thrive, with the next generation ready to take charge.

One such young leader is Alexa Tollman, a sophomore at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the incoming Nebraska State FFA Vice President. Growing up in Crawford, Nebraska, she became passionate about agriculture after joining her family’s ranching business. Initially reluctant, she credits her father’s encouragement for her involvement in FFA, which broadened her knowledge and networking opportunities in livestock and management.

Tollman envisions a bright future for the beef sector, highlighting how advancing technology, such as virtual fencing, can enhance ranch operations. As she prepares to become a fifth-generation cattle producer, she embraces her role in sustaining the agricultural backbone of her state. “I’m blessed to be raised in this industry,” Tollman stated, reflecting on her commitment to continuing her family’s legacy in cattle producing.
