40th Annual Nebraska Special Olympics Torch Run Concludes in Lincoln
Lincoln, NE – The 40th annual Nebraska Special Olympics Torch Run culminated Wednesday afternoon, with participants bringing the ‘Flame of Hope’ to the Hall of Justice in downtown Lincoln. Runners from the Lincoln Police Department, Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department, and Lancaster County Attorney’s Office took part in the event, which has successfully raised funds and awareness for Special Olympics Nebraska over the years.
Carolyn Chamberlain, President and CEO of Nebraska Special Olympics, emphasized the significance of the funds raised, stating they support essential offerings such as the state summer games, including housing, food, and facilities for over 7,200 athletes with intellectual disabilities. Chief Michon Morrow of the Lincoln Police Department highlighted the torch’s symbolism, noting that it stands for hope, courage, and possibility for many.
The torch run made 12 stops across the state before concluding in Lincoln. The opening ceremony for the Special Olympics Summer Games was held that evening, with events continuing through Saturday night. As the community comes together in support of these athletes, the spirit of the torch burns brighter than ever.
