University of Nebraska regents revise bylaws to adhere to federal anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion mandate

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved changes to multiple bylaws in response to President Donald Trump, despite opposition from students, faculty, and some regents. The amendments, approved in two 6-2 votes on Friday, included policies on equal opportunity, admission of students, and diversity in nonresident tuition remission programs. The changes were made following a warning from the Trump administration threatening federal funding for colleges and universities with diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

Student regents expressed concern over the impact of the changes on underrepresented students, with some faculty also warning of potential harm. Regent Jim Scheer cited financial concerns as a reason for supporting the changes, while Regent Kathy Wilmot emphasized the need to ensure educational opportunities at the university.

Despite the approval of the changes, there is ongoing debate about the implications for students and education at the University of Nebraska. The regents also approved other agenda items, including the establishment of the Nebraska Children’s Justice and Legal Advocacy Center and a graduate certificate for emergency nurse practitioners.
