Social media protections and student phone ban gain momentum in Nebraska Legislature

State lawmakers in Nebraska are on the verge of passing two bills that aim to enhance online safety for minors and restrict student phone use in schools. The first bill, Legislative Bill 504, also known as the “Age-Appropriate Online Design Code Act,” was proposed by State Sen. Carolyn Bosn. It requires online services to protect minor users’ personal information and aims to address the negative impact of social media use on youth, such as mental health issues and bullying.

The bill would apply to online services with significant revenue derived from user data and includes provisions for parental controls, limits on screen time, and restrictions on targeted advertising for minors. Despite concerns about First Amendment rights, the bill has gained support from lawmakers who emphasize the importance of protecting children online.

A second bill, LB 140, seeks to curb student cellphone use in schools. These bills are part of a larger effort by state officials to address online safety for minors. Bosn’s bill is set to take effect in January with penalties for noncompliance, emphasizing the need to prioritize children’s safety in the digital age.
