Legendary Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook may have retired, but he is still very much in the game. Since stepping away from the sideline, Cook has revealed his plans to spend more time watching Nebraska football games, a luxury he didn’t have while coaching. However, retirement hasn’t been all relaxation for Cook, as he finds himself busier than ever managing appearances and interviews.
Despite the whirlwind of post-retirement life, Cook has been touched by the outpouring of appreciation from Nebraska fans, receiving letters and gifts from all over the state. With an illustrious career that includes four national titles, Cook’s impact on Nebraska volleyball is undeniable. He has produced numerous volleyball icons and made a lasting impression on the sport and the program.
Now, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents is considering renaming the arena at the Bob Devaney Sports Center to The John Cook Arena in honor of the legendary coach. The proposal includes new signage and a bronze sculpture of Cook, highlighting his contributions to the program. With an impressive coaching record and numerous accolades, it’s clear that Cook’s legacy is one worth celebrating.
If approved, Cook will join Terry Pettit, another volleyball legend, who had the court named after him in 2013. The potential renaming of the arena serves as a fitting tribute to Cook’s impact on Nebraska volleyball and the sport as a whole. The regents will meet to discuss the proposal, marking a significant moment in Husker Nation history.
