Measles outbreak in Texas approaches 500 cases as infection spreads among children in day care centers

In Lubbock, Texas, six young children at a day care center have tested positive for measles, contributing to a total of 481 confirmed cases in the state. The outbreak began at the Tiny Tots U Learning Academy, where children between 5 months and 3 years old tested positive for the disease. With no clear guidance from the CDC on how to handle measles in a large day care center, the facility is taking precautions by closely monitoring symptoms, isolating affected classrooms, and encouraging families to get vaccinated.

The U.S. is facing its largest measles outbreak in six years, with cases reported in more than a dozen states. The CDC has provided limited updates on the outbreak and hasn’t held a news briefing since 2019 when major outbreaks occurred in New York. While Texas health officials received 2,000 doses of the MMR vaccine, funding cuts have forced some areas to cancel vaccine clinics.

Health officials are concerned about the potential for more outbreaks in child care facilities, as unvaccinated individuals are at a high risk of contracting measles when exposed to the virus. The CDC recommends two doses of the MMR vaccine for lifetime protection against measles, with the first dose typically given after the child’s first birthday. Day care centers are urged to take necessary precautions to prevent further spread of the disease.
