Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin tied Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record for the most goals scored in league history with his 894th career goal on Friday against the Chicago Blackhawks. Ovechkin, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, has lived up to his promise as an offensive force, holding several scoring records including most power-play goals and most overtime goals. He has also won nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophies for most goals in a season and is a three-time NHL MVP. Ovechkin led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup win in 2018 and won the Conn Smythe Trophy that year. Despite not advancing past the first round of the playoffs since then, the Capitals are currently leading the Eastern Conference and second overall in the NHL. Ovechkin, 39, has been playing professionally since 2001 and his contract with Washington runs through the 2025-26 season.
