Nebraska Cattlemen are worried about job cuts at US Meat Animal Research Center

The recent layoffs at the USDA’s U.S. Meat Animal Research Center have raised concerns for the Nebraska Cattlemen Association. Executive Vice President Laura Field expressed worry about the impact of the layoffs, which included researchers, technicians, and data management employees. The center, located in Nebraska, conducts important research on bovine respiratory illnesses, heart failure in cattle, food safety, heifer fertility, and feed efficiency.

Field emphasized the significance of the center for the cattle industry across the country, and expressed concerns about the potential long-term impacts of the layoffs. U.S. Congressman Adrian Smith also highlighted the importance of the facility for livestock production innovation and animal health.

The Nebraska Cattlemen Association and Congressman Smith are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that federal spending cuts do not hinder the important work being done at the USMARC. The facility, located on a 35,000-acre site near Clay Center, employs fewer than 100 people. The community and livestock producers rely on the research conducted at the center for advancements in agriculture and food safety.
