Nebraska DHHS issues warning about tuberculosis outbreak in Kansas City

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services has reported an update on Tuberculosis cases in Nebraska and an outbreak in Kansas City, Kansas. In Nebraska, there were 41 cases reported, which is a 20-year high. Conversely, counties around Kansas City, Kansas have reported 67 patients with active tuberculosis as part of an outbreak, with 79 patients confirmed with latent tuberculosis in the area. Active tuberculosis is when patients have multiple symptoms and are infectious, while latent tuberculosis patients do not have symptoms and cannot spread the disease unless the bacteria multiply and become active. The DHHS recommends that individuals consider active tuberculosis as a diagnosis if symptoms appear, and those exposed to patients with active tuberculosis should also be tested for latent tuberculosis. So far, no cases in Nebraska have been linked to the Kansas City outbreak. This information was released by WOWT and is copyrighted in 2025.
