What’s the Deal with Senator Pay and Term Limits?

Civic Nebraska is advocating for four constitutional amendments to make Nebraska’s Legislature more accessible and effective. Currently, lawmakers earn only $12,000 annually with no health insurance and are limited to serving eight years. The proposed amendments aim to increase salaries to $30,000 annually, tie salaries to the minimum wage, provide health insurance, and allow lawmakers to serve three terms.

These changes are important to make public service a viable option for more Nebraskans, provide healthcare benefits, and retain experienced lawmakers in office for up to 12 years. The public hearings for these amendments will take place next week at the Nebraska State Capitol.

Civic Nebraska argues that higher pay and benefits for lawmakers are necessary to attract qualified individuals and ensure a Legislature that represents the people of Nebraska. Just like underpaid teachers would not be able to provide the best education, underpaid and inexperienced lawmakers could also negatively impact the state. Making these changes will lead to a more effective and representative government.
