The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s early childhood intervention program, NEW INSIGHTS Into Children’s Temperament, is expanding to increase accessibility to rural classrooms through a virtual format. The program helps young students learn about and process their emotions using roleplaying and characters. By providing a language for emotions, it aims to improve classroom environments. Initially aimed at children with specific disorders, INSIGHTS now includes training for all students, teachers, and parents.
Based on research on personality temperament, the program uses four characters to help children understand and react to emotions. Teachers have reported improvements in disruptive behavior, attention skills, and academic achievement. The program encourages students to be considerate of others’ feelings and promotes empathy. By helping children connect with characters and recognize their own and classmates’ emotions, INSIGHTS helps develop self-regulation skills that can lead to future success. Teachers also benefit from a better understanding of their students, enabling them to support and teach more effectively. Overall, INSIGHTS is making a positive impact on social and emotional learning in early childhood education.
