Neligh teacher Dexter Hanzel was honored with the prestigious Milken Educator Award and a $25,000 check. Hanzel, who teaches math and science at Neligh-Oakdale Junior and Senior High School, credited his students for the award, saying it wouldn’t be possible without them. The Milken Family Foundation annually recognizes educators for their teaching excellence without their knowledge through a confidential selection process. Hanzel, inspired by his own teachers and coaches, aims to instill positive values in his students and hopes they become good people. This is the first time someone from his school district has received the award, making Hanzel the 49th Nebraskan to be honored. He is the sole recipient from Nebraska this school year, following two recipients from the previous year. Hanzel, who has been teaching for nine years, expressed gratitude for the award and the opportunity to positively impact his students’ lives in Neligh.
