Staff Senate striving for enhanced workplace environment

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Staff Senate, now in its third year, is focused on improving workplace culture and policies for all staff members. The Senate was formed in response to recommendations from an exploratory committee under the N2025 Strategic Plan, with 57 senators elected in 2022. In its recent mid-year progress report, the Senate highlighted accomplishments such as staff development opportunities, safety policies, and awards for excellence. However, the top priority is the Task Force on Workplace Culture and Engagement, aiming to make the university an employer of choice and retain top talent.

President Jordan Gonzales emphasized the importance of a positive workplace culture in increasing productivity and retention. The Senate has identified nine key goals for the future, including equitable policies, mental health support, and professional development opportunities. Despite being a new organization, the Senate has already made significant strides in representing staff voices and influencing decision-making. Nominations are currently open for the upcoming election, and staff members are encouraged to share ideas and concerns with the Senate to continue improving the university’s work environment.
