Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen declared February as Nebraska 4-H Month, recognizing the positive impact of the program on youth development, leadership, and community engagement. The proclamation signing ceremony, attended by 4-H members and Nebraska Extension professionals, highlighted the importance of 4-H in shaping the future leaders of the state. Kathleen Lodl, Nebraska Extension’s associate dean, emphasized the educational opportunities provided by 4-H, extending beyond traditional agriculture into areas like engineering and robotics. The proclamation, drafted by Extension educators Angela Abts and Lori Swanson, highlighted the significant participation of nearly a third of Nebraska youth in 4-H across all 93 counties.
The youth ambassadors in attendance, representing various counties, shared their excitement and gratitude for the experience of meeting the governor and visiting the State Capitol. 4-H aims to empower young people to address important community issues and offers various programs throughout the state. With the official proclamation of Nebraska 4-H Month, there is hope for increased support and opportunities for youth in the program. In the United States and globally, 4-H continues to play a vital role in youth development and empowerment.
