Government Shutdown in Nebraska Causes Disruption to Legislature, DMV, and Other Offices

A systemwide outage of state government computers in Omaha, Nebraska disrupted the work of the Legislature and shut down various state office websites, including Health and Human Services and Transportation departments. The outage also affected the lighted board in the legislative chamber that shows lawmakers’ votes. As a result, the Legislature adjourned after less than an hour without debating scheduled bills. State websites and communications were restored before 1 p.m., but the reason for the shutdown was not immediately disclosed. The Office of the Chief Information Officer is investigating the root cause, and it is unclear if a malicious act was behind the outage. Governor Jim Pillen’s office, which also experienced website shutdown, did not have more information on the cause of the outage. Despite the disruption, afternoon committee hearings on proposed legislation were able to be held. Further updates on the situation are expected as investigations continue into the cause of the outage.
