Nebraska lawmakers have revived efforts to promote school choice with the introduction of the Opportunity Scholarship Act, known as LB509. The bill aims to provide tax credits to individuals who donate to private and faith-based scholarship funds, following the defeat of a previous school choice initiative in a ballot last year.
Supporters argue that scholarships have a positive impact on students’ lives by providing financial assistance for education. However, opponents are concerned that the bill could divert funds away from public schools, with over 200,000 Nebraskans signing petitions against the use of public funds for private schools.
The Legislature’s Revenue Committee held a public hearing on the bill, with 247 people expressing support and 610 expressing opposition. Only three individuals remained neutral. In a separate development, a coalition of Nebraska state senators has written a letter expressing concern about Elon Musk’s access to federal systems through the Department of Government Efficiency, urging the national delegation to oppose Musk’s influence.
