U.S. Central Command in the Middle East Welcomes New Chief Technology Officer
U.S. Central Command, the combatant command responsible for American military operations in the Middle East, has announced Joy Angela Shanaberger as its new Chief Technology Officer. Shanaberger, who previously served as a senior adviser to Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks, stepped into the role last month at Centcom’s headquarters in Tampa, Florida.
In her new position, Shanaberger will be instrumental in driving innovation efforts that have wide-ranging implications for the military, including advanced technologies such as unmanned platforms, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and counter-drone systems. She succeeds Schuyler Moore, the first-ever CTO at Centcom, who is now serving in an intelligence role at U.S. Naval Forces Europe headquarters.
Shanaberger’s experience includes founding a tech-acceleration company serving defense and intelligence communities, as well as serving as a special assistant during the Obama administration in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics. She is poised to build on the foundation laid by her predecessor and scale up innovation efforts at Central Command.
Schuyler Moore expressed confidence in Shanaberger’s abilities, calling Centcom fortunate to have her on board. With a background in technology deployment to the tactical edge and a history of working closely with defense and intelligence communities, Shanaberger is well-positioned to lead Centcom’s technological advancements in the years ahead.
