The Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame in Lincoln is a place where the legends of high school athletics in the state are honored and celebrated. One such legend is Peaches James, a former softball player from Papillion-La Vista who overcame her lack of confidence in high school to become one of the greatest pitchers in Nebraska history. The Hall of Fame features 16 interactive exhibits that allow visitors to step onto the court or field of inductees, with displays organized by different types of flooring.
The idea for the Hall of Fame began in Gothenburg in 1992 and finally came to fruition in 2014. The 7,000-square-foot space honors coaches, contributors, officials, and athletes from a variety of sports, including wrestling, golf, swimming, and tennis. Notable names featured in the Hall of Fame include Alex Gordon, Mike McGee, Julie Geis, Jordan Larson, and Johnny Rodgers.
Visitors can access the history of about 700 existing and non-existing high schools in Nebraska on touch screens and learn about the achievements of Heisman winners, professional athletes, and Olympians. The Hall of Fame is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 1-4 p.m., and nominations for new inductees are accepted each year.
The Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame aims to inspire future generations of athletes by showcasing the accomplishments of those who have come before them. With a focus on inclusivity and diversity, the Hall of Fame recognizes the accomplishments of athletes from all parts of the state and all backgrounds.
