Georgia man handed nearly 500-year sentence for organizing dog fights and animal abuse

Vincent Lemark Burrell, a Georgia man, was sentenced to 475 years in prison for facilitating dog fights and abusing animals, including 107 dogs seized from his property in November 2022. This is the longest sentence involving dog fighting known to date. Burrell denied involvement in dog fighting in court. The case began when an Amazon delivery worker reported dogs tied up with heavy chains on Burrell’s property in Dallas, Georgia. The dogs, believed to be pit bulls, showed signs of abuse, such as being underweight and lacking food, water, and shelter. Some dogs were found in a basement living with urine and feces on the ground. Evidence at Burrell’s property linked him to dog fighting, including equipment like a treadmill designed for dogs and a breeding stand. A veterinarian found some dogs with removed teeth and fighting scars. The dogs were seized by authorities and taken in by a nonprofit rescue group. Among the rescued dogs was Baby Shark, who was intended for illegal fighting. Burrell was convicted by a jury on 93 counts of dog fighting and 10 counts of animal cruelty. Superior Court Judge Dean C. Bucci sentenced Burrell to the maximum allowed by law. Authorities believe justice was served with the lengthy sentence, sending a strong message against animal abuse and dog fighting.
