Former nanny Scarlett Pavlovich has filed lawsuits against best-selling fantasy writer Neil Gaiman and his estranged wife, Amanda Palmer, accusing Gaiman of repeated rape and demanding to be called “master.” Pavlovich, along with four other women, came forward with abuse allegations against Gaiman on a podcast and in a New York Magazine story. Gaiman denied the allegations in a statement on his website, admitting to being careless with people’s hearts but denying any non-consensual sexual activity.
Pavlovich claims she met the couple in 2020 in New Zealand and began working for them doing errands, babysitting their son, and helping with chores. Gaiman and Palmer, well-known figures in the writing and music industries, announced their divorce in 2022. The lawsuit alleges that Palmer played a role in presenting Pavlovich to her husband and that she was complicit in the abuse. Pavlovich felt trapped in the situation, fearing that she would lose her job, housing, and future career support if she left.
The lawsuit details instances of abuse, including Gaiman calling Pavlovich his “slave” and the assaults continuing until she threatened suicide and was hospitalized. Pavlovich reported the rapes to the police, hoping that Palmer would support her, but Palmer refused to speak to law enforcement. Gaiman faces professional consequences following the allegations, with Dark Horse Comics announcing they would no longer publish his works. A planned movie adaptation of one of his books was also put on hold. Gaiman and Palmer have not publicly commented on the recent lawsuits.
