The University of Nebraska–Lincoln students are making a difference in their community through a program called Engage Lincoln, organized by the Student Leadership, Involvement, and Community Engagement team. For the past three years, students have been volunteering at local nonprofits once a month, focusing on themes like food insecurity and environmental sustainability. With about 60 partner organizations, students help with tasks like organizing food donations, putting together literacy kits, and walking dogs at the Humane Society.
Engage Lincoln has had a significant impact on organizations like the Food Bank of Lincoln, where volunteers contributed nearly 25 full-time staff hours last year, doubling the organization’s operational impact. Student site leaders, like senior Ben Bentzinger, lead the volunteers and emphasize the importance of giving back to the community. Through Engage Lincoln, students not only make a difference but also connect with others, learn new skills, and gain a better understanding of how they can contribute to causes they believe in. Andrew Brown, assistant director of community engagement, encourages students to find causes they are passionate about and get involved to make a difference.
