Potential Political Interference Threatens Preservation of Lakeside Cabins in SW Nebraska as Washington Politics Looms • Nebraska Examiner

Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer is facing opposition from departing U.S. Senator Joe Manchin regarding a bill that would allow lakeside cabin areas to remain at two southwest Nebraska reservoirs. Fischer, who has widespread support for the bill, is urging Manchin to reconsider his opposition before cabin owners are required to vacate the land in February. Despite this, a group of lawmakers is resisting Fischer’s efforts to pass a stand-alone bill on the cabin developments.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which manages the two reservoirs, had planned to remove the cabins to make way for improvements to campgrounds facilities. However, cabin owners and county officials in the area objected to this and supported the bill that would transfer management of the cabin developments to local counties. This move would allow the cabins to remain, preserving important economic contributors to rural Hitchcock and Red Willow Counties.

Senator Fischer has received support from over 1,000 local residents for the transfer of the property, emphasizing the importance of allowing these communities that have been in place for decades to remain. Efforts to pass the bill before the U.S. Senate recesses for the year are ongoing, with uncertainty regarding the outcome. Despite initial opposition from Senator Manchin, it is reported that he has dropped his opposition, allowing for progress on the bill to potentially be made.
