Nebraska lawmakers propose ending daylight savings time

Nebraska lawmakers are considering bills to eliminate the biannual clock changes by adopting a permanent time system. State Sen. Megan Hunt introduced LB34, proposing year-round daylight saving time, while Sen. Dave Murman introduced LB302, advocating for year-round standard time. The bills were discussed in a public hearing before the Nebraska Legislature’s Government, Military, and Veterans Affairs Committee.

Supporters argue that a permanent time system would bring economic benefits and alleviate the need to reset clocks twice a year. LB34 would require federal approval and neighboring states’ agreement for daylight saving time to become permanent. LB302, on the other hand, would automatically take effect if four neighboring states adopt the change.

While LB302 supporters highlighted public safety and health risks associated with daylight saving time, opponents expressed concerns about its potential impact on industries like golf and youth sports. Hunt emphasized the economic advantages of a permanent daylight saving time, citing a JP Morgan Chase study that showed increased credit card activity following the switch.

The bills have received mixed feedback, with LB302 slightly favored by proponents. The debate continues as lawmakers weigh the potential benefits and challenges of transitioning to a permanent time system.
