Nebraska Treasurer Urges Residents to Find Unclaimed Property

Nebraska State Treasurer Tom Briese is urging residents to take advantage of the upcoming “Unclaimed Property Day” on February 1. Through Nebraska Lost Cash and Missing Money, individuals can search for unclaimed property within and outside of the state. Briese emphasized that unclaimed property belongs to the rightful owner and should be returned to them promptly and free of charge. In 2024, Nebraska’s Unclaimed Property Division returned a record $23.3 million to almost 20,000 claimants, a 35% increase from the previous year. The State Treasurer’s Office holds unclaimed funds from businesses, government entities, and other organizations within Nebraska. Common forms of unclaimed property include unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, and uncashed checks. With over 33 million people in the U.S. having unclaimed property, Briese is encouraging all Nebraskans to check for any funds that may be rightfully theirs.
