UNLPD reopens investigation into Nebraska athletic ticket scams

Scammers targeting University of Nebraska-Lincoln students, friends, and families have stripped fans of over $1,500 in ticket-related promises for Husker athletics events, with football being the most common target. The 2024 academic year’s first semester saw a 325% increase in fraud reports, totaling 17 incidents. Assistant Chief Marty Fehringer expressed surprise at the scale of the fraud, with 11 reports specifically related to football tickets. The scammers operated from outside the country, making it difficult for UNLPD to pursue them. Fehringer mentioned that these scammers are not only targeting UNL but are affecting students and fans of college athletics nationwide. In response, UNLPD plans to educate ticket holders on safely buying and selling tickets to prevent future scams. Moving forward, they will proactively communicate with students, staff, faculty, and their families about these fraudulent activities to safeguard them from falling victim to these scams. UNLPD is committed to investigating these cases to prevent similar incidents in the future.
