Tsunami warnings lifted in California and Oregon following 7.0-magnitude earthquake

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck off the coast of California, triggering a brief tsunami warning for the coast of Northern California and southern Oregon. The quake occurred about 62 miles west of Ferndale, California. The warning was later canceled, but Humboldt County reported damage, with 10,000 people without power. The earthquake was a strike-slip earthquake in the Mendocino fault zone, at the intersection of three tectonic plates. It was the highest-magnitude earthquake in the area since the 1990s. Despite the seismic activity, the earthquake did not increase the risk of a quake on the dangerous Cascadia Subduction Zone, capable of producing devastating earthquakes and tsunamis. The area of the earthquake is known to be seismically active due to its location between the Cascadia Subduction Zone and the San Andreas Fault. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
