Nebraska’s broadband expansion is making significant progress, with the number of homes receiving dial-up speeds decreasing from 110,000 to 70,000. The state is on track to eliminate this issue within five years, thanks to a $405 million federal grant that covers up to 75% of building costs for private companies. State officials credit private investment and government programs for the success of the broadband expansion.
However, Nebraska’s Department of Transportation is facing a funding shortfall, with an annual deficit of nearly $150 million for transportation needs. This shortfall could lead to a projected $24.3 billion deficit by 2045. Committee Chair Mike Moser acknowledges the need for additional funding for roads, but highlights that there are no additional general funds available.
Despite progress in broadband expansion, transportation funding remains a pressing issue in Nebraska, with officials emphasizing the importance of finding solutions to address the growing deficit.
