Nebraska Legislature keeps Republican supermajority

The Nebraska Legislature’s balance of power was a key focus following the recent elections. Originally believed to have 33 Republicans, 15 Democrats, and one independent, the number of Republicans decreased to 32 after Democrat Mike McDonnell switched parties. However, a Republican victory in Omaha brought the number back to 33. A closely contested race in Grand Island could potentially change the balance again in favor of the Democrats. Additionally, a race in Fremont resulted in Republicans securing a supermajority with no Democratic candidate. Governor Jim Pillen expressed a desire for like-minded people in the legislature to work together on key issues such as protecting children, lowering taxes, agricultural concerns, and values. The closest race in District 13 of northern Omaha saw Democrat Ashlei Spivey leading Republican Nick Batter by a slim margin. All eyes remained on the Nebraska Unicam to see how the shifting political landscape would impact upcoming legislative sessions. Copyright 2024 WOWT.
