The Board of State Canvassers in Nebraska certified nearly all of the state’s 2024 election results with little fanfare, approving several close races without objection. The board, consisting of top state officials, certified all but one local race that triggered an automatic recount, which is set to take place on December 10. Nebraska’s first general election after implementing a new voter ID law was deemed successful, with only a small number of ballots rejected for non-compliance with the law.
Despite concerns about certifying ballot initiatives, including measures to legalize medical marijuana, both Secretary of State Bob Evnen and Attorney General Mike Hilgers have stated that they would certify the results. A recent court decision dismissed challenges to the measures, but the case is expected to be appealed to the Nebraska Supreme Court. The certification of the initiatives does not impact the legal challenge.
Deputy Secretary of State Wayne Bena praised the state’s election workers for their smooth processing of ballots, stating that the election went very well from all metrics. With the majority of Nebraska’s election results now officially certified, the state can move forward with the implementation of elected officials and any pending legal challenges.
