For over 30 years, one man has been finding Rockefeller Center’s Christmas trees

Every year, Erik Pauze, the head gardener at Rockefeller Center since 1995, is responsible for selecting the perfect tree for the plaza. The criteria for the tree includes being a Norway spruce that is at least 70 feet tall and 40 to 42 feet wide, as well as being strong enough to support the various wires, cables, lights, and star that adorn it. Pauze looks for a tree with a beautiful shape, fullness, and vibrant green color that would be ideal for anyone’s living room during the holiday season. While his role has remained consistent over the years, the process for selecting the tree varies annually. Pauze spends much of his time constantly thinking about the current year’s tree, as well as future trees, with his search typically beginning months in advance. In 2020, he came across the perfect Norway spruce while driving down the road and met the tree’s owner, Earl Albert, who agreed to donate it to Rockefeller Center. Pauze’s dedication and attention to detail ensure that the iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas tree continues to be a symbol of festive joy and holiday spirit for visitors each year.
