Aaron Sanderford replaces Cate Folsom as editor of Nebraska Examiner

Aaron Sanderford has been announced as the new editor-in-chief of the Nebraska Examiner, taking over from Cate Folsom, who is retiring after leading the publication since its launch in January 2022. With more than 20 years of experience in journalism, Sanderford has covered a variety of news topics including politics, crime, courts, government, and business for publications such as the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal-Star, as well as working as an investigative reporter for KMTV 3 in Omaha.

Originally from North Carolina, Sanderford also has experience as an assignment editor, editorial writer, and communications director for former Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Kentucky and is completing a master’s degree in journalism and mass communications from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln this month. Sanderford will officially start his new role on December 20th.

Folsom, who led the Examiner after retiring from a 40-year journalism career at the Omaha World-Herald, oversaw several significant projects during her time with the publication. These included investigative reports on systemic errors in calculating state prison sentences, allegations of misconduct by a candidate for governor, and conflicts of interest within state departments. The Nebraska Examiner is a part of States Newsroom, a nonprofit organization focusing on state-based news reporting without ads or paywalls.
