The Nebraska Deterrence Lab (NDL) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) has partnered with NATO to run a series of space deterrence wargames. The first wargame, held in the Netherlands in April 2024, focused on developing a deterrence framework to address security challenges. NDL faculty and students worked on preparing for the wargame scenarios, analyzing results, and developing computer applications and profiles on acting nations. Michelle Black and Deanna House, NDL co-leads, highlighted the lab’s value in understanding concepts differently and their previous work with NATO.
The collaboration has allowed students from various academic backgrounds to work together, gaining real-world experience and broadening their career prospects. Students like Miranda Barna and Maria Miller have found the interdisciplinary collaboration beneficial for their academic growth. The NDL students are currently working on the next wargame, scheduled for 2025, with plans to continue through March 2026. The partnership with NATO has showcased NDL’s expertise in deterrence research and networking, creating opportunities for future leaders in the field of space security.
