The recent certification of nearly all of Nebraska’s 2024 election results by the Board of State Canvassers was done with little fanfare, as reported by Erin Bamer of the Omaha World-Herald. The board unanimously certified the results of all races except for one local race that triggered an automatic recount. Despite this, several close races in the state Legislature and Nebraska’s congressional delegation were approved without objection. This was Nebraska’s first general election after implementing a new voter ID law, and Deputy Secretary of State Wayne Bena commended election workers for processing ballots smoothly. Bena mentioned that about 345 ballots were rejected due to non-compliance with the voter ID law, and approximately 654 early mail-in ballots were rejected for incomplete information. The only automatic recount was triggered in a Dawson Public Power District race where the second- and third-place finishers were separated by 20 votes. A meeting on Dec. 10 will certify the results of this recount.
There was questioning surrounding whether the board would certify the results of Nebraska’s ballot initiatives, including measures to legalize medical marijuana. Despite legal challenges, the board certified these results, with the case expected to be appealed to the Nebraska Supreme Court. Overall, the election was deemed successful by Bena, and the certification of results did not affect the ongoing legal challenge.
