More Detailed Racial and Ethnic Information to be Collected in Upcoming Census in Nebraska

The U.S. Census Bureau and multiple states are implementing changes to gather more detailed information about Americans’ race and ethnicity. This data disaggregation will help uncover disparities in housing and health outcomes while allowing individuals to choose identities that better reflect how they see themselves. The new census form will include checkboxes for main categories such as “Asian” and “Black,” followed by more specific checkboxes and an option for free-form responses.

Middle Eastern/North African will be a separate racial/ethnic category for the first time, and respondents can choose not to select a race if they identify as Hispanic or Middle Eastern/North African. The Census Bureau is seeking public input on how to categorize write-in responses and is exploring the inclusion of a “visual race” question to address how others perceive individuals.

Several states, including New Jersey and Oregon, are passing laws to collect more detailed data on race and ethnicity for state records. These changes aim to provide a clearer picture of identity and help guide policies for civil rights and government programs.
