Governor Pillen Unveils Agenda for Upcoming Legislative Session

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has outlined his legislative priorities for the upcoming 2025 session, focusing on issues such as transgender sports participation guidelines, property tax reduction through school funding reform, banning lab-grown meat sales, and changing the state’s electoral vote allocation to winner-take-all. Pillen emphasized that these priorities are just the beginning, with more to be accomplished in the future.

With a slim Republican supermajority in the Nebraska Legislature, Pillen will need bipartisan support to pass his agenda. The legislature requires a two-thirds majority vote to override a filibuster, and the GOP holds exactly that. However, any defection from Republican ranks would necessitate support from a Democrat or independent to avoid legislation being postponed indefinitely.

The 109th Nebraska Legislature is set to convene on January 8, 2025, where Pillen and lawmakers will begin working towards achieving their legislative goals for the state.
