Florida State hires Tony White as their new defensive coordinator

Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White is leaving the program to become the next defensive coordinator at Florida State, according to a report from Rivals national analyst Greg Smith. White will be joined by defensive line coach Terrance Knighton. White, who spent two seasons with the Huskers, was a nominee for the Broyles Award in 2023 and helped lead the team to strong defensive performances in both 2023 and 2024.

After a successful 2023 season, White was a candidate for head coaching positions and received a pay increase to stay at Nebraska. Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule recently hired former NFL coach John Butler, but Butler could be a candidate for the Huskers’ vacant DC position along with inside linebackers coach Rob Dvoracek.

Florida State had a challenging 2024 season, resulting in the firing of several assistant coaches, including defensive coordinator Adam Fuller. White and Florida State head coach Mike Norvell have history at Arizona State, where they both previously coached. White’s departure marks the second consecutive season a Nebraska staff member has joined the Seminoles.

White’s move to Florida State highlights the competitive landscape of college football coaching staffs as programs aim to strengthen their rosters with experienced and successful coaches. It will be interesting to see how White’s defensive expertise contributes to the Seminoles’ efforts to bounce back from a tough season in 2024.
