5 million people affected by winter weather alerts as snowfall continues in northern states


Five million people are currently under winter weather alerts as snow and rain disrupt post-holiday travel in the Northeast. Lake effect snow warnings are still in effect for areas downwind of Lake Erie, with some locations expecting 1 to 2 inches of snow per hour. Temperatures are expected to be 10 to 15 degrees below average in parts of the Plains, Ohio Valley, and Mid-Atlantic.

An Arctic blast has brought dangerous conditions to northern states, with Erie already experiencing at least 30 inches of snow. One woman, en route to a heart transplant operation, had to be rescued by New York State Troopers after getting stranded on a snowy highway. Despite the harsh conditions, she was successfully transported to a local hospital and then flown to Cleveland for the transplant.

The Southeast is not spared from the cold snap, with a freeze warning in place for northern Florida and southern Georgia. The Thanksgiving weekend saw record travel numbers, with 2.8 million travelers on Saturday alone, according to the TSA. Traffic at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport was so congested on Sunday that some travelers were seen walking from toll booths to terminals, prompting the airport to advise customers to allow extra time for their trip.
