Nebraska voters approve both medical marijuana measures, while a judge’s ruling is pending

Nebraska voters overwhelmingly passed two medical marijuana initiatives in the recent general election, with over 65% of voters supporting the measures. The initiatives legalize medical marijuana and establish a regulatory entity for it. Advocates, including Crista Eggers of Gretna, whose son suffers from seizures, have been campaigning for over a decade to get the issue on the ballot.

To secure a spot on the ballot, advocates had to collect over 230,000 signatures through a petition drive. However, concerns have been raised about the validity of some signatures, with a judge currently examining the issue. A decision must be made before December 2 when the results are set to be certified. If the judge deems that enough signatures were tainted, around 3,500, Tuesday’s results could be invalidated.

Despite the uncertainty, organizers from Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana believe that the overwhelming support from voters should be acknowledged. The campaign for medical marijuana in Nebraska has been a long and hard-fought battle, with advocates hoping that the initiatives will now bring relief to those in need. The passing of the measures marks a significant step forward for medical marijuana access in Nebraska, with supporters eagerly awaiting the final decision from the judge.
