TikTok owner suing former intern for $1.1 million over alleged sabotage of AI project

China’s technology company ByteDance is suing a former intern for $1.1 million for allegedly attacking its artificial intelligence large language model training infrastructure. The company, which owns TikTok, is seeking damages from the intern, Tian Keyu, in a lawsuit filed with the Haidian District People’s Court in Beijing. This case has gained widespread attention in China due to its focus on AI LLM technology, which has become a key area of interest globally.

The former intern is accused of deliberately sabotaging the team’s model training tasks through code manipulation and unauthorized modifications. ByteDance stated that it had dismissed the intern in August after discovering the alleged sabotage. While the company declined to comment on the lawsuit, it did mention in a social media post that rumors of millions of dollars in losses and over 8,000 graphics processing units being involved were exaggerated.

Legal action between companies and employees is common in China, but suing an intern for such a large sum is unusual. Tian Keyu, who is identified as a postgraduate student at Peking University, has not responded to the allegations. The case brings attention to the importance of AI technology in modern industries and the potential risks associated with internal sabotage.
